Placing Art in the Interior Design of cruise ships

EXAMPLES

Oasis of the Seas is home to more than 9,300 pieces of art by 21 artists of different nationalities.  The collection is valued at more than 10.000.000 dollars.  Each piece has been selected by the talented team...”

“…”Ovation of the Seas” broadens horizons with 11,000-piece art collection as exotic as its destinations. MIAMI, April 11, 2016 – Royal Caribbean International’s newest smartship, Ovation of the Seas, is setting sail…Guests onboard Ovation will experience these extraordinary ports while enjoying an 11,000-piece, 4.500.000 dollar art collection that has been inspired by the words of Confucius: “Wherever you go, go with all your heart.” The collection…features contemporary art from artists from around the world. “The true essence of a Royal Caribbean vacation is to broaden travelers’ horizons by introducing them to new and unexpected adventures and that includes the art we feature onboard our ships,” said Michael Bayley, President and CEO, Royal Caribbean International. “Ovation of the Seas features unexpected and destination-inspired artwork, unique pieces and interactive art experiences that will surprise and delight our guests.””

Pier Luigi Foschi. CEO Costa Cruises up to 2012.

“Costa Diadema contains more than 7,000 works of art by 41 artists, all themed on "royalty"; the collection features many works inspired by pop culture and the Italian Renaissance.”

NCL: “Norwegian Cruise Line's new Pride of Hawaii, which makes its debut next month, will display nearly 4,500 original paintings and sculptures. Not to be outdone, Royal Caribbean International is installing millions of dollars’ worth of artwork commissioned from hundreds of well-known artists on its new ship Freedom of the Seas, due in June.

That's a far cry from a few years ago, when ships were built and then designers figured how many posters they needed to decorate the walls.” https://license.icopyright.net/user/viewFreeUse.act?fuid=MjU2NzYwMTY=

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

RSSC (NCL): “…a ship framed around the art. When it came to Seven Seas Explorer, which Regent Seven Seas Cruises touts as the most luxurious ship ever built, Del Rio (President of the parent company NCL) picked every piece of art. 'I was by myself with the artwork. Nothing stressed me out more,' he disclosed aboard the current pre-inaugural cruise. The ship is a showcase for art, particularly bold abstract paintings that make dramatic statements against dark wood paneling. A pair of Picassos flank the entrance to the $10,000-a-night Regent Suite, Mirós are in the Master Suites and a Chagall and two Picassos hang in the bar of the Prime 7 steak house. A Weidemann is on the wall of the private dining room between Prime 7 and the French restaurant Chartreuse. For the past 2.5 years, Del Rio and his wife Marcia spent almost every weekend hunting for art. … Seven Seas Explorer's most monumental installation is the cast bronze, two-ton Tibetan prayer wheel... According to the venue's designer…, the piece cost $500,000, but that's not what makes it luxury. 'It's the only one of its kind, hand-made,'…

CELEBRITY CRUISES: Cruise ship Celebrity Reflection. Impressive Art. Guests on Reflection would be wise to stop and take a long look the flowers. The ship’s collection of noteworthy art includes a Jeff Koons Mirror Flower in an aft stairwell.

Working with a $5 million budget, consultants … acquired 136 new works for Reflection. “The Seductiveness of a Reflection” collection already featured 115 standout works that had been on ships no longer in the Celebrity fleet, and also added eight new site-specific installations. In addition to Koons, other renowned artists on display include Robert Rauschenberg, John Baldessari, Kiki Smith, and John McCracken.

Celebrity commissioned an artist to create an installation for the Upper Grand Foyer of each of the Solstice-class ships, to serve as a vessel for a live tree that gets sunlight through a skylight. On Reflection, the dramatic metal branches holding the live tree are the work of conceptual artist Bert Rodriguez.

The cruise line has been collecting art since the 1990s, and with the fleet-wide collection now valued at about $60 million, it recently created a Celebrity Art Collection catalog, found in staterooms on Reflection. Guests who want to get in touch with their own artistic side can take classes in The Art Studio, where Master Artists from the ArtCenter South Florida teach sketching, painting, and jewelry making.

CARNIVAL CORP.-COSTA CROCIERE has a very precise and long term policy on the presentation of its art on board. Also books exist presenting the company’s art collection. Here is one of them: “Arte a bordo.

PRINCESS CRUISES“To help Royal Princess passengers appreciate just some of the more than 4,000 works of art installed throughout the ship, Princess Cruises created a new self-guided Art and Architecture Tour that passengers can use with their own smart phones or tablets. This comprehensive resource lets passengers explore the ship’s extensive art collection with a 32-stop tour that they can follow throughout the ship or explore at their leisure as they encounter each piece. Each work on the tour is identified with a QR code that passengers can scan to access information about the artist and the artwork, plus a short video explaining more about the artist and the creation process. In addition to the ship’s many dramatic art pieces, the tour also highlights special architectural elements around the vessel,… In addition to accessing the Royal Princess Art and Architecture Tour via QR code, passengers can find links to the tour stops by using the ship’s Princess@Sea mobile intranet. The ship’s art director will also guide a live tour at least once per cruise, and passengers can pick up a printed copy of the self-guided tour route in the art gallery. The ship’s art gallery also features interactive touch-screens that offer additional artist information for art-loving passengers.”

Naming ceremonies of the new vessels

EXAMPLES

PRINCESS-CARNIVAL: Duchess of Cambridge, named a cruise ship on England's south coast Thursday… she cut a cord to send the traditional bottle of champagne smashing against the hull of the Royal Princess. The ceremony in the city of Southampton also included a blessing by the Bishop of Winchester, the Right Rev. Tim Dakin, a performance by British pop singer Natasha Bedingfield and music from military bands. Catherine was then to be given a brief tour of the cruise liner, as its "godmother."… There was a gala dinner Wednesday night for guests at the naming ceremony, who included representatives of the charities for which Catherine serves as patron. The Royal Princess was built for Princess Cruises, a part of Carnival Corp., at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy... Prince William's late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, was "godmother" to the original Royal Princess liner, which launched from Southampton in 1984. She and Catherine pronounced the same words as they played their role in the official naming ceremony, saying: "I name this ship Royal Princess. May God bless her and all who sail in her." Other "godmothers" for the cruise line's ships include the late British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and actresses Sophia Loren and Audrey Hepburn.

Cruises and exhibitions of art on board

EXAMPLES

Since as mentioned above, art-exhibitions on-board are associated mainly with auctions few cruise lines have deviated from that direction. P&O cruises though exceeded the line and became more creative to the benefit of their reputation and thus revenues as well.

An example of on board art exhibition ideas is the creation of art on-board or underwater as P&O has done, and then the created artworks could either be exhibited, and /or exhibited and available for sale as well.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

MSC CRUISES: “Most of the 12 MSC ships have an area identified as an art gallery on one of the lower decks where the shops are. However it's been years since I've seen any "art" exhibited and these areas are all unused. Holdovers from before art exhibits at sea became unpopular. Apparently the cruises out of Miami still have them.”

HAPAG LLOYD: … The (art) collection is complemented by exhibitions and lectures by artists on various topics of art history.

https://www.hl-cruises.com/ships/ms-europa-2/on-board/entertainment/art

 ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Combination of Visual Pleasure with art and education, except from paintings pictures etc. there is one cruise line: Mandy Cruising that has created cooperation with academics, for organizing and curating exhibitions accompanied with lectures but not for the usual art we see in cruises but for objects, dresses as it is mentioned: “The exhibition will bring together beautiful historic objects such as wood sculpture, bowls, canoes, weapons, large painted barkcloths and newly crafted objects made of shell and whale ivory, as well as examples of contemporary art.  Among the highlights will be a specially commissioned 26-ft sailing canoe and barkcloth wedding dresses. Over 250 objects, paintings, drawings and historic photographs will celebrate Fijian creativity and the important place of art in Fijian culture.”

The visual event is also matched with location that the ship will visit. Synergy is succeeded here for the benefit of the cruise brand-name and identity.

Cruises and dance festivals

One of the major reasons that customers chose to attend a cruise is entertainment

Theatre and dance performance combined with art and aesthetic pleasure as well can raise the popularity of a cruise line.

Different companies have invested a lot in dance and theatre performances and the most discussed with positive comments companies are: Carnival, Norwegian, Disney, Royal Caribbean, Cunard Cruise Lines, and Holland America Cruise Lines.

EXAMPLES

COSTA. “Danzare sulle note del tango lasciandosi cullare dalle onde del mare. È quanto propone Costa Crociere rinnovando l’appuntamento con il ‘Festival del Tango ArgdDDDentino’, arrivato alla sua 10^ edizione, per regalare a tutti gli ospiti una settimana assolutamente indimenticabile a bordo di Costa Diadema.”

Cruises and art auctions

EXAMPLES

Carnival, Holland America, Norwegian, Regent and Royal Caribbean are referred as the most well-known auctions in cruise-shipping companies. However, some of these lines have dropped Park West in the past, or have limited them to certain ships or regions. Princess has never used Park West, and some Royal Caribbean ships have dedicated galleries to contemporary artists.

https://www.foxnews.com/travel/2013/09/27/guide-to-cruise-ship-art-auctions.html

Extensive research indicated that even though art auctions have a long history in cruises and also customers always support and love to buy art on-board, but at the same time this process of art auctions has also gain a lot of negative predisposition since “frauds”, overcharged artwork incidents have been recorded, on the other hand auctions are still extremely popular and can also be a good source of revenue for your company. The only thing that is important though is that art consulting and organization is more than necessary in the case of on-board auctions in order to stop this negative preoccupation and move auctions to another cultural and entertaining level. Art auctions have become very popular for cruise-ships the past 20 years, art auctions are appreciated by customers when they have the quality of a gallery or a museum otherwise passengers consider them as an extension of the souvenir shop. Careful curation and organization is necessary.

MSC CRUISESCustomers Review: …”The art auction on the MSC Divina (and soon to be on the MSC Seaside) is run by Dreams Fine Art who have galleries in Miami and St. Maarten. This is not an easy company to research, other than turning up at one of the galleries, which I did at St. Maarten…There was quite a bit of older artwork on our cruise, and I wonder whether it's a clearance outlet for the land galleries. Given that Dreams has zero buyer's premium, and most of the art can be carried off makes it attractive for a flutter (and should earn me some raffle tickets). Compared with other auctions at sea, their bidding seemed fairer, their hammer prices often low. Did I buy anything? No! But I had a good time.”
