'When working with colour, Hans Elnar Thrue fills the entire surface, building up his paining in large simple shapes that preserve the dynamism of his brush strokes. Colour glows in one large gouache / acrylic  drawing, with green a dominating presence. The figure is a woman, but it is not such much the Individual woman who presides, but rather the psychological space she inhabits as a human being. Loneliness emanates from this rather heavy figure in abstract space". "ln the richly coloured works that dominate the exhibition, the artist reveals his fascination with Paul KIee, for example, whom he paraphrases in an abstract design language. But this only in parenthesis, for Hans Einar Thue is deeply fascinated by people and their facial expressions. The viewer meets sensitive, expressive faces; thoughtful, introverted types. Black contours frame powerful red, blue and green colours for emphasis. The extroverted and introverted are exemplified by portraits of a man and a woman. Here the artist has apparently objectified the feminine element as the driving force, and the masculine as meditative." "Not unusual for the times, the artist has tu med to the past and used the inspiration of Albrecht Dürer's self-portrait, a drawing from about 1492, in creating his own self-portrait: He peers out at the world, eyes a little tired and worried, his hand supporting his chin. Perhaps the doleful Impression is due to the small, quick, rounded etching strokes used to execute the work." "A gentle atmosphere abounds in a series of portraits of women In pro-file, and a face framed by a spring-green forest, built up of short, diagonal strokes. In these works, the figures stand forth clearly and dynamically against a background of strong colours, which do not get the upper hand. Other works show couples resting - vegetating - in what is perceived as fertile, abstract landscapes. The artist experiments heavily with materials, and where he uses textile pigments in a couple of portraits, he achieves great intensity and vulnerability from his harmonious colour choice. These portraits are also developed from the surface and in simple forms, in many ways reminiscent of an artist like Matisse." "Hans Emar Thrue shows that he has an independent talent for drawing and colour composition."
