Painted in the spring of 1873 (or possibly 1872), "Sunrise (Marine)" is an oil on canvas located in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, USA. It measures Unframed: 50.2 × 61 cm (19 3/4 × 24 in.). Monet, a key figure in the Impressionist movement, masterfully employed his plein air, or "outdoor," approach, using informal and spontaneous brushstrokes to capture the muted palette of the emerging dawn over the industrial port of Le Havre on the northern coast of France. The painting depicts the brilliant orange of the rising sun glimmering amid the damp air and dancing on the gentle rippling water, lighting up its iridescent blues and greens. Barely discernible through a cool haze, pack boats on the left billow smoke from their stacks. Painted as France rebuilt following the Franco-Prussian war, this work might also metaphorically suggest a new day dawning. "Sunrise (Marine)" is considered one of the first works in the Impressionist style that would make Monet famous.
