A Neoclassical Masterpiece

John Flaxman, a prominent English Neoclassical sculptor and designer, created this exquisite drawing as part of a series illustrating Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. Paris and Oenone captures a poignant moment from the myth of the Trojan War.

Key Features of the Drawing:

The Neoclassical Movement

The Neoclassical movement, which flourished in Europe during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, was a reaction against the excesses of the Baroque and Rococo styles. Neoclassical artists sought to return to the ideals of classical Greece and Rome, emphasizing reason, order, and harmony.

The Cleveland Museum of Art

The Cleveland Museum of Art is one of the most prestigious art museums in the United States. It houses a diverse collection of artworks from around the world, spanning centuries of human creativity. The museum is known for its commitment to education and public engagement, offering a wide range of programs and exhibitions for visitors of all ages.

The Significance of "Paris and Oenone"

Flaxman's drawing is a significant work of Neoclassical art, showcasing the artist's mastery of line and composition. It offers a timeless interpretation of a classic myth and continues to inspire and fascinate viewers today.

Paris and Oenone: A Tragic Love Story

Paris was a Trojan prince, son of King Priam and Queen Hecuba. Destined for a significant role, he was abandoned as an infant due to a prophecy that he would bring ruin to Troy. Raised by a shepherd, Paris grew up on Mount Ida. His idyllic life was disrupted when he was chosen to judge a beauty contest between the goddesses Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite. His decision, influenced by Aphrodite's promise of the most beautiful woman in the world, sparked the Trojan War.

Oenone was a nymph, a spirit associated with nature, specifically mountains and valleys. She was known for her wisdom and prophetic abilities. Oenone and Paris were deeply in love, and she warned him of the dire consequences of his choice. However, Paris, blinded by desire, ignored her warnings.

When Paris was wounded during the Trojan War, he sought Oenone's help. However, filled with bitterness and regret, she refused to heal him. As a result, Paris died from his wounds. Consumed by remorse, Oenone eventually took her own life.

The tragic love story of Paris and Oenone is a powerful tale of love, loss, and the consequences of hubris. It has been depicted in numerous works of art and literature throughout history, including poetry, painting, and opera."
