Thomas Eakins (1844–1916), a master of American Realism, painted Maud Cook in 1895. This oil on canvas portrait is part of the collection at the Yale University Art Gallery, where it is displayed on the second floor in the American Art before 1900 section. In his later years, Eakins focused on portraiture, often painting friends and admired acquaintances. Unlike his depictions of men, which emphasized their public personas, his portraits of women, like Maud Cook, reveal vulnerability and emotional tenderness. Shown in a glowing pink dress, Maud tilts her head toward warm light that casts shadows highlighting the structure of her face, neck, and chest, giving the painting a subtle radiance. Years later, Cook fondly recalled the artist likening the portrait to “a big rosebud.”
