About

"Sandro Botticelli, "Primavera" (c. 1480) Museum: Uffizi Gallery, Florence, Italy Collection: Painting Location: A11. Botticelli - Spring Technique: Tempera grassa on wood Size: 207 x 319 cm Inventory: 1890 n. 8360

Description: "Primavera," also known as "Spring," is one of Sandro Botticelli’s most iconic masterpieces, painted around 1480. This remarkable artwork showcases nine figures from classical mythology advancing over a flowery lawn in a lush grove of orange and laurel trees.

At the center of the composition stands Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, depicted in a modest and chaste manner, slightly set back from the other figures. Accompanying her is Cupid, blindfolded and preparing to fire his arrow of love. To the right in the foreground, Zephyrus, the god of the west wind, is shown embracing a nymph named Chloris, who is later transformed into Flora, the goddess of spring.

On the left side of the painting, the Three Graces, minor goddesses representing virtues such as beauty, joy, and love, are depicted dancing in a harmonious circle. The composition is completed by Mercury, the messenger of the gods, identifiable by his helmet and winged sandals, as he touches a cloud with his caduceus.

The painting’s complex meanings remain somewhat mysterious, but it serves as a celebration of love, peace, and prosperity. The dark color of the vegetation can be attributed to the aging process of the original pigments, yet it is lightened by the vibrant abundance of fruits and flowers. Notably, Botticelli meticulously painted at least 138 different species of plants, all accurately rendered, suggesting he may have used herbaria for reference. This attention to detail underscores the artist's dedication to the work, as seen in the skilled application of tempera on the poplar wood backing.

Originally, "Primavera" was located in the house on Via Larga (modern-day Via Cavour) belonging to the heirs of Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de' Medici, cousin of Lorenzo the Magnificent. The painting was hung above a lettuccio, a type of chest with a back commonly found in Renaissance noble homes. It was later moved to the Villa di Castello, where Giorgio Vasari described it alongside Botticelli’s other masterpiece, "The Birth of Venus," in 1550.

Fame and Influence: "Primavera" is not only one of Botticelli’s most famous works but also a quintessential image of the Renaissance, celebrated for its enchanting beauty and profound symbolism. It has inspired generations of artists, writers, and scholars, becoming a focal point for art lovers and historians alike, and is considered an emblem of Renaissance humanism and classical mythology. The Uffizi Gallery, housing this masterpiece, is one of the world's most prestigious art museums, attracting millions of visitors each year, eager to witness the elegance and complexity of Botticelli's "Primavera.""
