Jean-Honoré Fragonard’s The Fountain of Love captures a romanticized moment of passion as two young lovers approach the magical waters of the Fountain of Love. Rooted in classical mythology, the fountain represents a motif of divine love that inspired lovers to fall in love when they drank from its waters. This work is framed within the mythical Garden of Love, a setting that epitomizes idealized romance, and features lively putti who frolic in the waters while one offers the lovers a cup. In the Rococo spirit, Fragonard bathes his figures in delicate colors and soft light, achieving an intimate atmosphere enhanced by the forested backdrop and billowing fountain spray.
